Dustdogs

Description

So, I'm playing the Warhammer 40.000 Dark Heresy Illumination adventure, the one that's in the basic book, and there are several mentions to xenos named "Dust Dogs", biped reptilian aliens used as mount in some worlds of Calixis Sector like Iocanthus.

As I couldn't find any official image at all, I decided to illustrate my view on the "doges". I imagined them like some kind of "convergent evolution", looking a lot like earthly dinosaurs but with some small amount of big birds like ostriches and Terrorbirds (Phorusrhacidae). Basically they are large predators covered with a scaled hide for protection from the sun and dust (as they seem to live in desertic places and planets), two strong and powerful legs, a short and fat tail (works like the camel "back balls", storing water and food) to counterweight and a large jaw, vaguely dog-like (as they are known to "bark" like a dog).

Also, for some flavor, the adult males have a colorful necklace-like membrane, like some lizards from Australia, used to attract females for reproduction and be waved to frighten adversaries and make the animal look bigger than they really are.  Also males have long scales in the back, mostly for gender differentiation.

Like earthly dogs, Dust dogs are pack predators, used to hunt in small packs of six to 20, submitting themselves to an alpha male, usually the elder male of the pack. Raised by humans, they tend to see the owner as the alpha male and obey him loyally. They are almost as intelligent as a dog, and can learn tricks, recognize their owners (and hold grudges), guard houses and fetch items, and young Dust Dogs are good companions to children (their claws and teeth start to grow only after 10 years, and they usually eat insects and some small prey, swallowing them whole, until them), usually being loyal servants and mounts when both become adults.

A well feed and kept Dust Dog can survive for 50 to 80 Terran years, and they become sexually active at 12 years old. Females can lay 5 to 10 eggs each year and they take 5 to 6 weeks to hatch.
